Chemical spill - Rutherford

At 10:45am Fire and Rescue NSW were alerted to an incident on Kyle Street, Rutherford following reports an unknown chemical had been spilt in an abandoned warehouse.

Numerous stations from the Lower Hunter Region arrived on scene to find small vials of a suspicious substance had spilt on the ground.

Specialist HAZMAT crews established an exclusion zone and donned fully encapsulated suits and breathing apparatus.

Once decontamination showers were established, prepared crews entered the exclusion zone to remove the substance, which took almost an hour and a half.

The site has since been handed over to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to investigate further.

No injuries were reported.
