Solar Panel Fire - Jewells, Lake Macquarie

Published: 09 Oct 2020 02:04pm

Just after 2pm, 9 October, a call to Triple Zero (000) alerted Fire Rescue NSW to reports of solar panels that were alight on the roof of a home on Jody Close, Jewells.

Belmont Fire Station responded to the incident and on arrival discovered a small amount of smoke issuing from the roof.

Firefighters got to work and found an electrical fire in the isolator switch of the solar panels and used a fire extinguisher to put out the small blaze.

Crews disconnected the panels from the system and isolated at the metre box before rendering the home safe for the occupants to return.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said it was important to take steps to ensure solar panels were as safe as possible.

"Over the last five years we have seen solar panel related fires increase five-fold. It is not uncommon to see solar panels cause house and building fires," he said.

“By ensuring solar panels are installed by a licensed installer, and are well maintained by a professional, you can prevent a tragedy."
