BBQ Fire - North Avoca

Published: 02 Sep 2020 06:39pm

Fire and Rescue NSW was alerted by a Triple Zero (000) call just after 6:30 pm to a BBQ alight at Table Top Rd, North Avoca.

Fast-acting residents were able to shut off the gas, remove the foodstuffs that were alight and use a fire blanket to smother the fire.

Upon arrival the crew from Terrigal found there was still active fire in the BBQ and extinguished the blaze.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said the leading cause of house fires in NSW is leaving cooking unattended and it was important the community remembered to keep looking when cooking.

"If your cooking catches fire, never use water to put out a fat or oil fire, turn off the stove if it is safe to do so and call Triple Zero (000)."
