Kitchen Fire - Coniston

Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to a unit block shortly after 1pm, in Coniston, Wollongong, after a call to Triple Zero (000) reported a smoke had been in alarm and smoke could be seen.
Crews from Bulli fire station were first on the scene to establish the cause. After making entry, they discovered food had been left on the stove top and had caught alight.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguished the food before damage occurred. Crews then ventilated the smoke filled apartment and reset the smoke alarm.
Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said the leading cause of house fires in NSW is leaving cooking unattended and it was important the community remembered to keep looking when cooking.
"If your cooking catches fire, never use water to put out a fat or oil fire, turn off the stove if it is safe to do so and call Triple Zero (000)."
