Unit Fire - Merewether

Just after 12pm multiple Fire and Rescue NSW crews from the Newcastle area have responded to reports of a unit fire on Watkins Street, Merewether.

On arrival crews were faced with large volumes of black smoke and fire coming from a unit on the third floor.

A number of residents in the building have been evacuated. Firefighters have managed to contain the blaze to the unit of origin and are commencing salvage operations.

NSW Police and NSW Ambulance are also in attendance.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
