Published: 27 Aug 2020 06:58pm

Just before 7pm yesterday evening Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to a BBQ fire on a balcony at Dee Why Retirement Village.

Crews from Dee why and Narrabeen arrived to find a fire on the balcony of the unit and quickly worked to extinguish it and stop further spread.

Two elderly residents managed to evacuate themselves with some minor injuries and burnt hair.

Ambulance has been called to assess the residents.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said the leading cause of house fires in NSW is leaving cooking unattended and it was important the community remembered to keep looking when cooking.

"If your cooking catches fire, never use water to put out a fat or oil fire, turn off the stove if it is safe to do so and call Triple Zero (000)."
