New Fire and Rescue recruits join the ranks as summer starts

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has welcomed 16 new firefighters into their ranks this week in a graduation ceremony that marked the end of an era for the agency, Minister for Emergency Services Troy Grant said.

The State’s newest firefighters, who include two former soldiers who served in Afghanistan, a chef, a yoga instructor and four second-generation firefighters, were the last to graduate from the FRNSW State Training College at Alexandria.

The college, which has served as the training base for firefighters since 1974, will be replaced by the larger, state-of-the-art FRNSW Emergency Services Academy at Orchard Hills.

Mr Grant congratulated the recruits, and welcomed them into the firefighting family as summer kicks off.

“These 16 firefighters have signed up for one of the most challenging and important jobs in our community, and will take up positions at fire stations just in time for summer,” Mr Grant said.

“They have been tried and tested during months of intense training, from firefighting and road‑crash rescue, to advanced first aid, fire science and hazardous materials response.

“This is vital and often dangerous work and I thank these men and women for putting up their hands to protect the community.”

FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said the graduates were a fitting final class for the Alexandria college.

“This graduating class has the diverse skills, capabilities and talents required to undertake the varied work that our firefighters do – from educating the community and providing emergency medical care to responding to natural disasters and hazmat incidents,” Commissioner Baxter said.

“They’ve been trained to be prepared for anything and I know they will uphold the high standards of integrity, courage and professionalism expected of a FRNSW firefighter.”
