A Caringbah fire officer’s 32-year commitment to improving firefighter health and wellbeing has been recognised in today’s Australia Day Honours.

Superintendent Peter Levett has been awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM), the highest honour an Australian firefighter can receive.

Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Commissioner Paul Baxter congratulated Superintendent Levett, who is one of three FRNSW firefighters to be awarded the prestigious medal in today’s honours.

“During his career, Superintendent Levett demonstrated strong and compassionate leadership with a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of his fellow firefighters,” he said.

“He was instrumental in the delivery of new health monitoring initiatives and the fostering of career development for firefighters through his work with the International Firefighter Exchange Program.”

Joining FRNSW in 1985, Superintendent Levett served as a firefighter at a number of fire stations in western Sydney and as an Inspector within the greater Sydney area.

He was appointed as Manager Operational Personnel in 2009 and then Manager Operational Communications Centres in 2011, taking responsibility for two emergency centres and the dispatch of resources to manage emergency incidents.

Superintendent Levett was also an integral member of the NSW multi-agency teams responsible for the planning and preparation for possible outbreaks of swine flu and equine influenza.

Commissioner Paul Baxter said Superintendent Levett had shown great commitment to protecting the people of NSW.

“He is a most deserving recipient of this Australia Day Honour,” he said.

Superintendent Levett retired from FRNSW at the end of 2017. He will be presented with his AFSM at a ceremony later this year.
