Cops v Firies in inaugural 9/11 Memorial Cup - rugby

The date is set, the pitch is booked and the Fire & Rescue NSW Rugby Union Club is limbering up for what promises to be a cracker of a tournament against the NSW Police in the inaugural 9/11 Memorial Cup on Thursday 11 September.
The cup will be played in memory of the thousands of people, including 343 firefighters and 60 police officers, who lost their lives in New York City, Washington DC and Pennsylvania on 11 September 2001.
"In particular, we dedicate the 9/11 Memorial Cup to the emergency responders and New York City Fire Department, with whose rugby club we have very close ties," said Inspector Mick Wren, Duty Commander Metro East 3 Command and FRNSW Rugby Head Coach.
The event, which has been sanctioned by Australian Rugby Union, will consist of three games – including men's over 35s, women's opens and men's opens – at Taplin Park, Drummoyne, with the first game (men's over 35s) kicking off at 1300 hours.
"This is our first 9/11 Memorial Cup and we really hope it will grow in size and popularity," said Inspector Wren.
