Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins today celebrated the completion of a major $550,000 upgrade of Merriwa Fire Station.

Commissioner Mullins said the new station was more modern and better equipped.

"It was my great pleasure to be at Merriwa today to celebrate this major $550,000 investment in fire fighting resources," Commissioner Mullins said.

"The new station will provide a bigger and better base for the eight firefighters who protect Merriwa and surrounding communities from fires, accidents, chemical spills and other emergencies."

Commissioner Mullins said the new, purpose-built fire station included improved staff accommodation with a new kitchen and mess room, an improved watch room and office and new storage for vital fire fighting equipment such as breathing apparatus.

"Merriwa firefighters do a great job protecting the community," he said.

"This new station will boost their ability to continue their work in keeping our community safe and protected from fires and other emergencies."
