Minister for Police & Emergency Services Michael Gallacher and Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins welcomed 22 new firefighters who graduated at the State Training College in Alexandria today [30 May].

"These graduates are a fantastic addition to the firefighting resources across NSW," Minister Gallacher said.

"The recruits have been trained in firefighting, road crash rescue and high-angle rescue, community risk management, fire technology and hazardous materials management," Minister Gallacher said.

Minister Gallacher said the new recruits had successfully completed the gruelling 13-week course.

"They will now put their intensive training into action, joining suburban fire crews across the Sydney metropolitan area."

FRNSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said thousands of men and women applied for firefighting positions this year.

"We want communities throughout NSW to be served by a modern and dynamic firefighting workforce that reflects the diversity, culture and skills of society. We are thrilled with the response FRNSW has had to the recruitment campaign," Commissioner Mullins said.

'Today's graduates include a number of former retained firefighters and trades people, teachers, hospitality workers and surf lifesaving volunteers.

"These are men and women with different ages and life experiences, including Sam Rouen who won the 2008 series of The Biggest Loser.

"The graduates reflect the diversity of cultures, skills and life experience FRNSW sought in its workforce throughout NSW and they all have a very high level of physical fitness," Commissioner Mullins concluded.
