Major hazard reduction at North Head on Tuesday

Firefighters from Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW), the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) will undertake a major hazard reduction operation at North Head, Sydney tomorrow (Tuesday, 4 September) from 10am.
FRNSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said the hazard reduction will involve 21 fire crews and two helicopters.
“FRNSW is undertaking this hazard reduction as part of a series of controlled burns being conducted, in conjunction with the RFS and NPWS, in preparation for the bushfire season.
“Firefighters have been planning for this burn for months, taking into consideration the delicate eco-system and historic buildings around North Head.
“Firefighters will start the controlled burn in three separate locations around North Head, and it is likely that the burn will generate a lot of smoke. Residents in the area should not be alarmed and should only call Triple Zero in the event of an emergency.”
People living near North Head, especially those with health issues, should take precautions such as closing doors and windows and staying indoors.
The entire North Head area will be closed to the public for the duration of the burn, which is expected to continue well into the afternoon. Roads may be smoke affected and motorists should slow down if driving in smoky conditions.
