23/09/11 - Truck fire closes M5

Published: 23rd September 2011

At 1.16pm today fire crews were called to reports of a truck fire, city bound on the M5 Hume Hwy near Narellan Rd at Campbelltown.

Fire trucks had to force their way through heavy traffic to reach the incident site. Firefighters reported a tanker containing 27000 litres of liquid bitumen was well alight and there were fears concerning a number of large LP gas cylinders located on the truck which supplied the fuel to keep the bitumen heated during transport.

The truck was also located on an overpass which crossed over Badgally Rd. The M5 and Badgally road were closed to all traffic to allow firefighters to safely extinguish the large blaze. One lane south bound was re-opened just before 2.00pm and further south bound lanes were re-opened at 2.42pm. North bound lanes were opened at 4.00pm after the burnt out truck was removed from the roadway.

The incident caused major traffic disruption and fortunately no injuries were reported. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
