10/09/11 - Fatal unit fire at Caringbah

Fire crews were called by a Triple Zero phone call at 2302pm on Saturday 10 September to a unit fire in Oleander Parade, Caringbah.

Cronulla firefighters were on scene within seven minutes and reported smoke issuing from the bedroom of a single level brick and tile residence. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly entered the bedroom and located an elderly woman collapsed in the bedroom and removed her to the front lawn. The fire was quickly brought under control however the elderly lady had stopped breathing and had no pulse. Firefighters immediately commenced Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) until the arrival of the ambulance crew.

The woman was transported to hospital in a critical condition but unfortunately died later that morning. A report surrounding the circumstances of the fire is being prepared for the coroner.
