13/09/11 - A spillage at Port Botany being contained

Last night, Monday 12 September, at 10.18pm, Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters were called to an incident at Port Botany. It was determined that a shipping container on board a vessel contained ruptured drums of a product containing 70% nitric acid.Fire crews have worked on the incident throughout the night and today. The spill on board the vessel was contained earlier this morning and the shipping container moved to a safe and isolated area of the port. Firefighters are currently working to remove and neutralise the ruptured drums.
A 250 metre exclusion zone is in place and Fire and Rescue NSW hazmat specialists are on scene monitoring the situation.
As at 1.30pm this afternoon, the incident is well in-hand and at this stage poses no threat to residents, businesses nor the environment in the Botany area.
