Published: 13th September 2011

Last night, Monday 12 September, at 10.18pm, Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters were called to an incident at Port Botany. It was determined that a shipping container on board a vessel contained ruptured drums of a product containing 70% nitric acid.

Fire crews have worked on the incident throughout the night and today. The spill on board the vessel was contained earlier this morning and the shipping container moved to a safe and isolated area of the port. Firefighters are currently working to remove and neutralise the ruptured drums.

A 250 metre exclusion zone is in place and Fire and Rescue NSW hazmat specialists are on scene monitoring the situation.

As at 1.30pm this afternoon, the incident is well in-hand and at this stage poses no threat to residents, businesses nor the environment in the Botany area.
