Published: 7th September 2011

Just before 9.00am this morning fire crews were called to the corner of Elizabeth and Market Streets, Sydney, to reports of a gas leak in a building on the corner of that intersection.

City of Sydney firefighters were on scene within minutes and discovered that a gas pipe had been ruptured by workmen in the basement of a building. Due to dangerous gas levels, about 40 people were evacuated from the building. It was also considered to necessary to close down the intersection to all road and pedestrian traffic.

The incident caused traffic issues for the city as Elizabeth and Market Streets were closed to all traffic during the incident.

Gas company workers had to drill into the footpath area in order to finally seal off the leak. Fire crews conducted further air sampling of the area and all roads and the building were re-opened at around 11.30am.
