09/09/11 - Tyre factory fire at Campbelltown

At 7.11am this morning, crews were alerted by numerous Triple Zero calls to a factory fire in Blaxland Rd at Campbelltown. St Andrews fire crew sent a message en route that large volumes of smoke were visible and due to the number of triple Zero calls being received additional resources were responded. Thirty firefighters from six surrounding fire stations were called to assist.St Andrews crew arrived on scene within eight minutes and sent a radio message confirming that a tyre warehouse, of metal construction well alight.
A large pall of black smoke was visible across many parts of Sydney due to the large number of tyres involved. Crews entered the building and commenced an aggressive internal attack and established protection hose lines around the building to prevent spread to exposures.
At one point crews were withdrawn due to the threat of live powerlines. Two aerial platforms were deployed to assist in containment of the blaze. Crews were also deployed to monitor any contamination in the water run off during the firefighting operation.
Within half an hour crews successfully contained the fire to the front show room area and the final Stop message was sent at 9.48am confirming that the showroom area had been destroyed. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
