17/08/11 - House and shop damaged at Old Guildford

Published: 17th August 2011

Neighbours have been praised for their efforts in helping save a family from a burning house in Broughton Street, Old Guildford, today, Wednesday 17 August.

Fire crews were alerted at 10.14am and four minutes later, the crew from Fairfield sent a Red message en-route requesting a third fire engine to respond due to the large volumes of smoke visible. When they arrived, they confirmed that a house and an adjoining shop were well alight and twenty firefighters from four surrounding stations were requested to assist. A quick search confirmed that all occupants had escaped safely and the fire was quickly contained.

Nearby neighbours had helped four people out of the smoke-filled premises and had also pushed a burning car away from the front of the house prior to the arrival of firefighters. Three people were transported to hospital suffering smoke inhalation.

The house and shop were extensively damaged by the fire which is still under Police investigation.
