10/08/11 - Mosman Shopping Centre fire

Published: 10th August 2011

Just before 3.30pm hours today, Wednesday 10 August, firefighters at Mosman were alerted to a fire in a building adjacent to the fire station. Smoke was issuing from the roof area of a vacant shopping complex in busy Military Road.

It took some time to ensure that power was isolated to the area before the difficult task of lifting roofing materials commenced in order to locate the seat of the fire. Six fire trucks were requested to assist during the protracted incident.

The shopping complex contained approximately twenty shops which were under redevelopment and therefore the building was unoccupied at the time. The incident attracted significant media attention as Military Road had to be closed to all traffic during the peak hour.

Good work by attending crews limited damage to the roof area of the building and the Stop message was finally sent at around 6.30pm. Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
