18/06/11 - Large Ammonia gas leak at Kooragang

Crews attended a large Ammonia gas leak at Kooragang, near Newcastle yesterday afternoon (Friday 17 June). A pipe was accidentally ruptured and several hundred staff were moved to safe areas within the complex whilst firefighters and plant staff repaired the leak.
Firefighters were called at 2.45pm to the Greenleaf Rd Chemical plant at Kooragang and remained on scene until 9.18pm. Hazmat crews continually monitored the atmosphere around the plant and determined that there was no threat to any surrounding areas. Firefighters from Mayfield West, Stockton, Newcastle, Carrington, Hamilton, Lambton and Charlestown attended the incident.
