A burst hydrant pipe caused major flooding in an underground carpark at North Sydney today.

Firefighters were called at 9.21am on Monday 13 June to the Century Plaza high rise residential building in Walker Street at North Sydney.

A hydrant pipe had burst in the underground carpark inundating the area with thousands of litres of water. One hundred residents were evacuated as a precaution due to the risk of electrical and water faults throughout the building. Fire and Rescue NSW responded several high volume pumping trucks normally utilised for high rise firefighting to assist in the massive pump out operation. At around 10.30am it was considered safe for residents to return to their premises while the pumping operations continued.

Thirty Firefighters from seven surrounding fire stations worked for over six hours to pump out the basement and the area was declared safe at around 3.30pm. Water authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.
