06/06/11 - Firefighters save Liverpool family

Published: 6th June 2011

Early this morning, just before 5.00am (Monday 6 June) we witnessed firefighters again performing an exceptional task in rescuing a young child and his parents from a burning residence above a shop in Memorial Street, Liverpool. A father heroically shielded his wife and child from the heat and flames as firefighters used a power saw to cut through five steel bars in the kitchen to rescue the trapped family with only possibly seconds to spare. All three were taken to hospital for further treatment with the father requiring urgent treatment for severe burns to his back. Another family of six living above the fire unit were also assisted by crews to safety.

Crews attending were from Liverpool, Cabramatta, Horningsea Park, Bonnyrigg Heights, St Andrews and Busby. The Commissioner of Fire and Rescue, Greg Mullins, personally visited the premises later this afternoon and saw first hand how the rapid response and efforts of all the crews involved were critical in saving a family close to death. The Commissioner has passed on his congratulations to all firefighters involved. The cause of the fire has been determined as accidental.
