02/06/11 - St Vincent De Paul Shop damaged

Just before 6.00am this morning, Thursday 2 June, firefighters were called to smoke issuing from the St Vincent De Paul Shop in Phillip Street at Parramatta.

Firefighters arrived quickly within six minutes and confirmed that the shop was heavily smoke logged. Fifteen firefighters from Parramatta, Wentworthville and Rydalmere attended the call and a quick search of the premises confirmed that a fire was burning at the rear of the shop. An upstairs residence was checked and one person was safely evacuated without injury. The fire was quickly extinguished however it did cause damage to the building and its contents. The premises next door was also affected by smoke logging.

Phillip Street was closed to all traffic during the operation and was re-opened after 8.00am. The fire is being treated as suspicious and Police are continuing their investigations.
