Just after 11pm last night, Friday 27 May, fire crews were called to reports of an explosion in a block of units on Edward Street at Botany. The firefighters from Botany were on scene within four minutes of the call and reported that there appeared to have been an explosion on the first floor of the three level block of units and the unit was totally involved in fire.

Twenty people were evacuated from the block of units and it took twenty four firefighters from Botany, Mascot, Matraville, Maroubra, Darlinghurst and Alexandria about an hour to contain the fire.

A female occupant of the unit suffered extensive burns as a result of the incident and unfortunately died as a result of injuries sustained. A full report into the cause of the incident is currently being prepared for the coroner. The unit was severely damaged and the unit above also suffered heat and smoke damage.
