26/05/11 - Firefighters quickly avert shopcentre fire

Published: 26th May 2011

There were some concerns at the Westfield Shopping complex at Parramatta today around midday when fire crews were called to investigate a strong smell of smoke through the shopping centre air conditioning.

Sixteen firefighters from four fire stations attended the incident and discovered that a generator had overheated and set fire to some wooden flooring in one of the service ducts. Firefighters worked for an hour and a half using CO2 fire extinguishers to carefully extinguish the fire without causing any damage to other equipment.

Once the fire was extinguished a full check of the system was conducted and area was declared safe at around 1.45pm. There was minimal disruption to the shopping complex during the incident.
