24/05/11 - Resident jumps from balcony

One person was forced to jump from a first floor balcony to escape a fire in a unit on Isabella Street, North Parramatta earlier today.
Firefighters were called at 5.46am to the four level unit block when fire took hold of the first level unit. Fire crews were on scene within seven minutes and quick actions by attending fire crews contained the fire to the unit within the block which contained eleven other residential units.
Twenty residents were evacuated as a precaution and a search of the premises by firefighters wearing breathing equipment determined that no-one else was trapped inside. It took firefighters about twenty minutes to bring the fire under control. The unit was extensively damaged and two people were conveyed to hospital for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
