13/05/11 - Helicopter crash at Bankstown

Just after 4.00pm today fire crews were called to reports of a helicopter crash at the eastern perimeter of Bankstown Airport.

Firefighters from our air wing who are stationed at Bankstown were first on scene and confirmed that a crash had occurred resulting in a large fuel fire. They commenced an initial attack on the blaze until back up units arrived. Fortunately the pilot was able to escape from the helicopter with relatively minor injuries and was later transported to hospital for further treatment. A nearby building was evacuated for a short period as a precaution.

Four fire crews attended the blaze which took about twenty minutes to extinguish. Air crash officials are investigating the circumsatnces surrounding the incident.
