Published: 8th March 2011

At 1:06pm on Tuesday 8 March, Fire and Rescue NSW began receiving Triple Zero calls to a major fire at Greenacre. Fire crews from Chester Hill and Lidcombe were the first to arrive on scene and found a car wrecking yard well alight. Firefighters were confronted with exploding gas cylinders and large volumes of thick black smoke due to burning tyres and fuel. Fortunately everyone was accounted for, with Police evacuating over 100 employees from surrounding businesses.

Due to the intensity of the fire and strong winds, flames quickly spread into an adjoining vehicle repair shop. Neighbouring businesses also under threat. To combat the intense blaze, fire crews from Bankstown, Lidcombe, Revesby, Riverwood, Kogarah, Lakemba, Campsie, Mortdale, Hurstville, Burwood, Parramatta, Silverwater, Concord and Guildford were called in.

The wrecking yard and car repair shop were totally destroyed by fire. However due to the tremendous efforts of firefighters, all other surrounding businesses were saved.
