Saturday 26 February was an unusually busy day for residential fires across the state with Fire and Rescue crews attending at least fourteen fires requiring swift action.The first fire commenced at 2.30am in a unit at Kingswood and was able to be quickly contained. Foodstuffs left unattended caused fires in residences at Epping, Port Macquarie and Woodberry. A single level residence was totally destroyed by fire at Earlwood and a house severely damaged by fire at Glenn Innes. Ceiling fans caused fires at Broken Hill and Belmont North and a laundry fire was extinguished at Leumeah. Further fires were extinguished before causing major damage at Darling Point and East Maitland. Crews were required to call in a snake handler to remove twenty snakes after extinguishing a small fire in a bedroom at Marylands. Calls were received to reports of fires in a further two houses at Narraweena and Mt Druitt, but both turned out to be Hungis in progress.
