28/01/11 - Three factory fires and fatal residential fire

Published: 28th January 2011

At 03.08am on Friday 28 January, fire took hold of an auto wrecker and spare parts factory in Exceller Street Bankstown. Flames were already through the roof of the 10x35 metre structure when crews arrived. Eighty firefighters from ten surrounding stations worked for over an hour to bring the large blaze under control. A wall and roof collapse hampered operations but crews were successful in saving an adjoining factory complex. Crews from Revesby, Riverwood, Bankstown, Kogarah, Lakemba, Campsie, Mortdale, Hurstville, Burwood and Hazmat attended the incident.

At 12.42pm over 100 firefighters battled a massive factory fire - see separate story.

And later on Friday, in Berry Street, Granville, a two level vehicle restoration workshop caught on fire at 3.07pm. Crews from Parramatta, Silverwater, Rydalmere, Merrylands, Glebe and Wentworthville attended the fire. Crews quickly contained the fire to a rear mezzanine level and a spray booth. One civilian was transported to hospital with smoke inhalation and a firefighter with a back injury was also transported.

Fatal fire at Parramatta

The busy day ended sadly at Robertson Rd in Parramatta when crews were called at 11.18pm to reports of a unit fire. Crews from Parramatta, Rydalmere, Northmead and Silverwater contained a fire within one room of a ground floor unit. Unfortunately one male occupant was located deceased within the room. Investigations are continuing into the cause.
