Fire Brigades' Rescue Capability Reaches New Heights

Emergency Services Minister, Steve Whan, said the NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) will be able to scale new heights in CBD emergencies with the handover today of a new $1.7 million high-rise firefighting and rescue vehicle."The 44 metre ladder/platform vehicle, the most technologically advanced aerial firefighting and rescue vehicle in Australia, will significantly boost the city's firefighting and rescue capability," Mr Whan said.
"The new vehicle has a greater reach than previous models - up to 14 storeys high and 26 metres horizontally - and its greater manoeuvrability will be a major advantage for city firefighters when responding to high-rise emergencies," Mr Whan said.
The work platform on top of the ladder can carry 500kg - 100kg more than earlier units - so it can lift more firefighters at the one time and provide greater capacity in mass rescues.
"The State Government is continuing to provide our firefighters with modern and safe vehicles for their vital work," Mr Whan said.
"The Government's record $972 million 2010/11 emergency services budget included $637 million for the NSWFB, providing $18 million to continue updating its fleet with more than 35 new fire engines and specialised vehicles."
NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mullins said the extra capability the new vehicle afforded was a welcome addition to the NSW Fire Brigades' fleet and especially the firefighters based at City of Sydney Fire Station.
"Responding to emergencies in the CBD has many challenges. This new vehicle is more versatile, improves firefighters’ access during an emergency and can be used in many different areas of operation," Commissioner Mullins said.
