Published: 6th November 2010

Today fire crews attended six residential fires at Surry Hills, Blacktown, Doonside and Lidcombe. Unit fires at Potts Point and Hornsby were caused by foodstuffs left unattended on stoves. Crews also attended two Hazmat incidents at Liverpool and Lavington, two motor vehicle accidents at Beverley Park and Blacktown and a gas leak at the Merewether Golf Club.

The Surry Hills fire occurred just after 7.00 am this morning, severely damaging a town house and sadly, killing one male occupant. Fire crews responded to reports of smoke issuing from a three level boarding house terrace in Flinders Street, Surry Hills. The Flyer crew from City of Sydney were on scene in just over five minutes and sent an urgent message for additional support. Additional crews from City of Sydney, Redfern, Glebe, Alexandria and Hazmat crews attended the incident. Crews with breathing equipment were able to rescue two people from the townhouse but were unable to immediately locate a third person reported missing. A secondary search located a collapsed male who unfortunately was unable to be revived. The fire was contained to a bedroom on the third floor however the remainder of the structure was affected by smoke heat and water. A report into the cause of the fire is being prepared for the coroner.
