Fire Safety Boost for Lismore Community

Emergency Services Minister, Steve Whan, has welcomed a major lift to Northern Rivers' fire safety with the introduction of 8 new full-time firefighters at Lismore Fire Station from October 1.
Mr Whan said the new the full-time firefighters were a welcome addition to the area.
"The Northern Rivers region has grown significantly in recent years, which is why the move to increase the number of full-time firefighters at the station is good news for the local community," said Mr Whan.
"This will complement the existing roster of on-call (retained) and full-time firefighters already doing a great job of protecting local families.
"Firefighters from the Lismore and Goonellabah fire stations provide fire and emergency protection to about 29,000 people and 12,000 homes.
"The area also includes 21 schools, seven nursing homes, two hospitals, the Southern Cross University's main campus and Lismore Regional Airport.
"Having more firefighters in the area will help the NSW Fire Brigade (NSWFB) continue providing a world-class fire service 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
Full-time and retained firefighters already work together at Lismore Fire Station to provide fire and emergency protection to local families.
This will continue under the new staffing arrangement, with full-time firefighters now rostered at the station around the clock, and given valuable support by the retained firefighters.
"The station's retained staff will remain on-call and continue playing their vital role in fire operations," Mr Whan said.
NSW Fire Brigades Commissioner Greg Mullins said the NSWFB continually reviewed its resources to ensure the optimal allocation of resources across the State.
"Increasing the number and availability of firefighters at Lismore Fire Station will ensure we maintain the high level of service and rapid response rate we are renowned for, and the community expects," he said.
"It also means that Lismore firefighters are now better able to carry out fire prevention and community safety work, which is vital in preventing and preparing for emergencies."
