New recruits join firefighters' ranks

Nineteen new firefighters will join the NSW Fire Brigades’ (NSWFB) ranks after graduating from the NSWFB State Training College today.
Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan congratulated the new recruits on successfully completing the firefighter training course.
"The firefighter recruits have just completed training in firefighting, road accident rescue, community risk management, fire technology and hazardous materials management," Mr Whan said.
"It is now time for them to put this training into action, taking up posts at fire stations in Sydney."
Minister Whan said the role of a modern-day firefighter was diverse.
"They not only save people from burning buildings and road accidents but they offer expertise ranging from fire investigation to educating the community about fire safety," he said.
"I congratulate these recruits on graduating and wish them the best of luck at their new post".
NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mullins said the recruits were from a range of backgrounds, showing the growing popularity of firefighting as a profession.
"Today's graduates bring a range of skills to the job, with their previous roles including a stockbroker, a photographer, a social worker, a high school teacher and a personal trainer,” he said.
