In four days a tragic spate of residential fires across NSW has left 4 people dead and over 55 houses damaged in just one weekend. On Thursday 5 August an adult male occupant was killed in a house fire at Ashfield. On Saturday 7 August a 4 year old girl was killed in a house fire at Woodberry and just one street away a 97 year old died in another house fire on the morning of Sunday 8 August. A 55 year old male was also killed in a house fire at Hamilton on Saturday 7 August. All four fatal fires are currently under investigation and reports are being prepared for the coroner. Over 900 residential fires have already occurred in NSW since the start of winter. This time of year always sees an increase in residential fires caused by heating appliances, open fire places, unattended cooking items and electrical faults. Greg Mullins, the NSWFB Commissioner has issued another appeal for residents to take necessary precautions during the winter months including ensuring that working smoke alarms are installed and checked regularly.
