Wild storms lash Sydney

Published: 3rd August 2010

Firefighters in the Sydney metropolitan area were kept very busy all through the night and well into this morning. Fire crews responded to 348 calls from 6pm last night until 9am this morning. 240 of these calls were directly related to the storm. There were numerous cases of trees falling, some across roads and/or power lines, some of them damaging buildings and cars. There were also numerous other cases of power lines being brought down by the gale force winds. Firefighters assisted by cutting up and removing trees, removing debris and ensuring the scene around an incident was safe. They also waited at many incidents and kept people away from dangerous live wires until energy company employees could isolate the power to fallen lines. On top of this, there were two severe fires. A house at Parramatta was severely damaged early this morning and a domestic garage at Ingleburn was destroyed a few hours later. It was a night in which the NSW Fire Brigades diverse roles were on display.
