Working smoke alarm alerts neighbours

Published: 8th July 2010

Residents at a unit block in Rocket St, Bathurst, called 000 for the fire brigade today when they heard a smoke alarm operating in a neighbour's unit. Fire officers from Bathurst quickly responded to the scene and were in the process of gaining access to the unit when the owner arrived home. He had left a roast cooking in the oven. Fortunately, the smoke alarm alerted the neighbours before the situation developed into a fire. It also highlights the fact that 50% of domestic fires start in the kitchen and one should never leave unattended foodstuffs cooking on the stove or in the oven.
