Tender awarded for new Kincumber fire station

Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan today announced Central Coast company Baxter Building Co Pty Ltd has been awarded the tender for the construction of the new $1.7 million Kincumber Fire Station.

Mr Whan said the new NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) station, on the corner of The Scenic Road and Abundance Street, would be staffed by 21 full-time firefighters responding to fires and other emergencies around-the-clock.

"This is an exciting development for firefighters and the local community alike," he said.

"Fire stations are a large investment in the safety of our community and this new facility is a direct investment in the protection of residents and businesses in this area of the Central Coast.

"It will cater for the diverse and challenging role of firefighters in responding to a range of emergencies to protect residents in Kincumber, Terrigal and neighbouring areas, as well as retail and commercial businesses."

Mr Whan said the station would include two fire engine bays, a Station Commander’s office, meal and training areas and storage for firefighting equipment and uniforms.

"The NSWFB is committed to reducing its impact on the environment, so the Kincumber station has been purpose-designed to be eco-friendly," he said.

"It will be fitted with water tanks to provide rainwater for irrigation and toilet facilities, along with a series of photovoltaic solar collection panels to directly power the station and feed the balance of power generated back into the electricity grid."

NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mullins said the new fire station would enhance the ability of firefighters to respond to emergencies.

"Our firefighters need to be well-resourced and equipped to protect the community from fire, hazardous material incidents, accidents and other emergencies," Commissioner Mullins said.

"This investment allows firefighters to maintain a high level of service to the Central Coast."

Work is scheduled to begin in June 2010.
