Firefighters set to inspire Girl Guides

Five firefighters from the NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) will meet with 2000 excited Girl Guides this weekend to give them an insight into the career of a firefighter.On Saturday 10 April five members of the NSWFB will meet with Girl Guides, aged 5 - 100, at Mount Annan Botanical Gardens, 9.00am - 3.00pm.
Station Officer Kate Barnes (Hazmat Officer at Alexandria Fire Station), Firefighter Irene Lowe (Busby Fire Station), Retained Firefighter Lisa Gow (Ingleburn Fire Station), Senior Firefighter Melanie Rebane (Community Safety) and Senior Firefighter Marion Lucas (Recruit Training) will be attending.
Station Officer Barnes, who has been with the NSWFB for 14 years, said that firefighters were always delighted to speak to young people about a career with the NSWFB.
"We are really pleased to have the opportunity to speak to these young girls about what we do and how we've progressed in our careers. Firefighting is a fantastic career that offers variety and challenges.
"An important part of our role includes educating the community about fire prevention so as well as a kitchen fire demonstration we will also be giving the girls plenty of fire safety advice to take home to their families."
Girl Guide State Commissioner Belinda Allen said she was delighted the NSWFB is taking the time to meet with the girls.
"The Girl Guides is all about enabling girls and young women to grow into confident and responsible members of the community.
"Female firefighters are fantastic role models for our Guides because they make such a tremendous contribution to protecting the NSW community. They may even inspire some of our girls to look into a future career with the NSWFB."
