Diesel spill threatens local waterways - Blacktown

At 6.00pm on Wednesday 3 February 2010, Fire rescue officers from Seven Hills and Blacktown were called to a spillage of an unknown substance into stormwater drains near Bessemer Street in Blacktown. The large quantity of substance was most likely diesel and had started to enter a local waterway known as Breakfast Creek. A specialist Fire Brigade Hazardous Materials unit from St Mary's was also called to assist on scene. Fire rescue officers quickly deployed a number of floating absorbent booms across the local waterway and were able to contain the spillage to a confined area before any major pollution issue occurred. Extensive investigations were undertaken but at this stage the source of the leak has not been located, however local council environment officials have taken samples of the liquid and will continue their investigations.
