Summer fire safety blitz for Big Day Out

Fire safety arrangements at the Sydney Showground for the Big Day Out on22 and 23 January are being checked by the NSW Fire Brigades as part of a continuing summer fire safety blitz.
Minister for Emergency Services Steve Whan said the venue inspections were part of a state-wide blitz by fire officers to ensure party goers, holiday-makers and live music enthusiasts can safely enjoy all that is on offer this summer.
"Each year, hundreds of thousands of people converge on large venues around NSW for a whole range of music and sporting events, and the Keneally Government and the NSWFB are working to ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves safely," Mr Whan said.
"For the first time ever the Big Day Out is a two-day event with performers and staff staying overnight at the Showground.
"Fire officers will inspect the venue and accommodation to ensure smoke alarms are fitted in all sleeping areas, that adequate fire exits are available and that fire risks are minimised.
"Teams of fire officers will be at the Showground throughout the event making sure that fire warnings and exits are satisfactory so that in the event of an emergency, everyone can be evacuated safely."
NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mullins said that the fire safety blitz was part of the NSWFB's ongoing commitment to ensure major events in NSW are as safe as possible.
"It is just one of many inspections that will be carried out over the next few months with the Royal Easter Show the next event on the agenda for fire officers, closely followed by preparations for the 2010 NSW ski season."
