Fuel leak in a flooded car park at Coffs Harbour

Published: 9th November 2009

Firefighters from Coffs Harbour responded to reports of cars leaking fuel at the AMP Building, Gordon St, Coffs Harbour this morning. Upon arrival, the firefighters discovered that the basement carpark was flooded to a depth of about one metre and there was fuel leaking from the five cars that were in the carpark. Due to the build up of fuel vapours in the basement the occupants of the building were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The firefighters used their gas detector to verify it was safe for firefighters to work, laid down hyrdrocarbon booms to contain the spill and used a skimmer to remove the fuel from the water surface. The operation lasted several hours before the fuel leak was rendered safe and the occupants allowed to return to the building.
