Paper recycling fire Smithfield

Around lunchtime today firefighters from Merrylands and Fairfield responded to a fire in a paper recycling warehouse in Herbert Pl, Smithfield. On arrival the firefighters have found a large amount of paper and cardboard on fire under a warehouse awning. The response was immediately upgraded which brought in firefighters from Parramatta, Guildford, Leichhardt, Concord, St Marys and a Hazmat unit from Greenacre. Typically these type of fires can take a long time to extinguish because the fire gets very deep down within the paper. Firefighters used the assistance of an on site backhoe to reach the seat of the fire. The fire was extinguished by late in the afternoon.
