High winds damage unit block Waitara

Published: 25th August 2009

Early this morning as high winds affected many parts of the state, one residential unit block in Romsey St Waitara suffered damage to a section of its roof. Firefighters from Hornsby were responded to storm damage at the seven storey unit block just prior to the end of their night shift. On arrival firefighters have identified a large section of awning had been blown off its mountings and was sitting precariously on the edge of the roof. Additional firefighters were brought in from Beecroft, Gordon, Narrabeen and the NSWFB Rescue Section. A large capacity crane from a private contractor was also called for. Firefighters secured the awning in place before determining how to bring it to the ground. A decision was made that the safest way to do this was to dismantle the awning on the roof and bring it down in smaller pieces with the assistance of the crane. The incident was completed by the early afternoon.
