A fire in Sydney's Central Business District this morning sent clouds of black smoke billowing across the city.

Rapid response by the NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) to access and extinguish the fire prevented an escalation of the emergency.

Firefighters were called to the fire at 8.29am this morning. The fire had broken out in an air conditioning unit in an area undergoing renovations on level 12 of the Centrepoint shopping centre/Tower.

NSW Fire Brigades Commissioner Greg Mullins said: "More than 40 firefighters were on scene within minutes and their quick action in rapidly accessing and extinguishing the fire averted chaos in the inner city."

More than 40 firefighters from City of Sydney, The Rocks, Darlinghurst, Pyrmont, Glebe and Redfern fire stations attended the fire. Firefighters rapidly accessed level 12 to extinguish the flames using installed hose reels and hydrants.

The fire was extinguished at 8.50am with minimum disruption. There were noevacuations and no injuries. The cause of the fire is not suspicious.
